What are clinical hypnotherapy, strategic psychotherapy, and life coaching?
These three practices focus on treating clients by guiding them through their emotions, habits and behaviours, and evolving their perspectives to make positive and desirable change.
Hypnotherapy guided hypnosis done by a clinical hypnotherapist. It is based on the premise that the subconscious is where memories and emotions reside, such as fear, pain, anger, sadness, shame, guilt, and humiliation. These are born from painful experiences that you may no longer remember but the subconscious keeps to protect you from similar situations occurring again in the future, forming protective habits and beliefs. However, the subconscious is reluctant to respond to the logical and critical analysis of the conscious mind, which may be aware that these behaviours are not helpful. The goal of hypnotherapy is to make positive changes in one’s life by helping clients be receptive to options, altering their perspectives, and utilising their strengths and resources.
Strategic psychotherapy targets habits of thought and behaviour that can be risk factors for depression and anxiety. There are cognitive risk factors (overly global thinking, ruminative coping style, internalising blame) and interpersonal risk factors (excessive reassurance seeking, avoidant coping mechanisms, lashing out). Its goal is to explore what a person is doing when they are experiencing a problem or undesirable behaviour, replacing the habitual approach with practical behavioural strategies and coping skills. It is often paired with hypnosis for a more effective treatment.
Life coaching helps clients discover their personal best by learning how to make choices that create a balanced, effective, and fulfilling life. Coaches give advice and ask the right questions to help you navigate your emotions to make better choices.
How do they work?
In clinical hypnotherapy, clients are put in a trance-like state of focus, turning their attention to the subconscious to explore deep within themselves and make positive behavioural changes that can be difficult to achieve through other means, such as will power. Similar to a guided meditation, clients are encouraged to relax. They are not asleep or unconscious or under the ‘power’ of the hypnotherapist, but so focused that they may feel unaware of outside distractions. While in the hypnotic state, clients are more open to the positive suggestions by the hypnotherapist for change and improvement.
